Employee recognition is a central aspect of building a great culture. But (and this is a BIG but) without truly knowing the person you’re appreciating, you could be causing more harm than good. I could share hours of examples of recognition horror stories.
In the end, my advice to the stocky man at the conference was actually right. “Get to know your employees better.” And, if that seems impossible, implausible, or unscalable, then it’s a good thing companies and technology (like the one’s mentioned above) can help you do it faster.
